Being recognized for management practices that support animal welfare is more important than ever.

GAP Partners: Farmers and Ranchers
With the GAP 5-Step® Animal Welfare Rating Program, producers will be recognized for their commitment to farm animals and will also have the opportunity to market their products to restaurants, grocers, and other companies looking for GAP certified products.

We are not a one-size-fits-all model. Our program gives farms and ranches room to grow and change how animals are being raised from Step 1 all the way to Step 5+.

The GAP Certification Process

The GAP Certification Process

The first step in the process is assuring that GAP standards are being met. With GAP’s technical knowledge, we have created comprehensive standards by animal group for each of our GAP Step® Ratings. Scroll down to review our standards. Then the GAP application to 3rd party auditor is completed. Once completed, your application for GAP certification is sent to one of three independent, 3rd party auditors. We use independent auditors because the GAP label stands for integrity and transparency. If your facility passes the auditor’s examination, a GAP 5-Step® Rating is assigned. Based on the results of the audit, the farm or ranch will earn a Step Rating of 1 through 5+. Note: ratings can be improved with each subsequent audit. And finally, our independent auditors continue to conduct visits to the farm or ranch every 15 months, so that a different season is audited each time, to ensure compliance with GAP standards.

Certification is worth it. Why, you ask?

  • Put simply, market demand. Consumers are demanding more humane treatment of farm animals and being third-party verified matters.
  • GAP certification differentiates you from your competition: the levels help consumers easily differentiate between products, which you can leverage for your marketing purposes.
  • Having a GAP label means instant marketing support for your products, in the press, online, on social media platforms, and at trade shows.
  • It feels good to do the right thing: for the animals and for the Earth

How Are Our GAP Standards Developed?

GAP has a rigorous process for setting standards that involves lots of input along the way.

Standards Development - 1 - Research

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Scientists, farmers and certifiers gather information from experience, peer-reviewed research, and geographic variables to begin to create a draft of species-specific standards.

Standards Development - 2 - Review

REVIEW

Each set of species-specific animal welfare standards is iteratively reviewed by multiple professionals and may go through the review process multiple times.

Standards Development - 3 - Collaboration

COLLABORATION

An initial draft is posted for public review, comments and feedback. This step opens dialog and provides us with ideas and perspectives that may have been missed.

Standards Development - 4 - Revision

REVISION

A revised draft is authored, reviewed, and tested on-farm to ensure all concerns have been acknowledged. Each set of animal welfare standards may be revised for multiple periods before a final draft is submitted to the GAP Board for approval.

Standards Development - 5 - Approval

APPROVAL

Once approved by the GAP Board, standards are published for use in the GAP 5-Step® Animal Welfare Rating Program.

5-Step® Animal Welfare Standards

Our multi-step standards are truly unique. Each species-specific standards reflects a thorough, collaborative and transparent process, which blends the best of scientific and practical knowledge currently available. By involving input from farmers, ranchers, scientists, veterinarians, certifiers, industry experts, advocates and food companies, our standards reflect our mission of continuous improvement in animal agriculture, and our commitment to supporting our partners through the process, Step-by-Step.
